ARIEL LUNA ANAIS

Ariel Luna Anais is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in her hometown of San Antonio, Tx. She received her B.A. in New Media and Painting from the University of Southern California and joined the mural restoration team at the Social and Public Art Resource Center in Los Angeles. After returning to San Antonio, she continued her work in the field of public art with her participation in the Arbol de la Vida monument at Mission Espada. Anais has exhibited her work in numerous galleries and venues across the U.S. and is currently working to expand her range through the study of chemistry.  

COMO LA CHICHARRA

“Como la Chicharra”, (“Like the Cicada”), depicts a calavera crowned by two cicadas accompanied by the flickering orbs of golden fireflies at twilight. In glimmering song, the insects gently lead the sunset procession like spiritual guides for those departed. The piece is named after the protest poem and song by María Elena Walsh where the cicada is celebrated for its triumphant resurrection and defiance in the face of death. It rises and resists to sing it’s beautiful song into the heavens. In the tradition of Dia De Los Muertos, “Como la Chicharra” paints the living’s relationship with the dead near the sun sharing the sky with the moon.
