JAMES SUPA MEDRANO

James Supa Medrano was born and raised in a Mexican-American household on the west side of San Antonio, Tx. As a child growing up he would constantly be drawing and it gave him the freedom to be creative and use his imagination. In his teen years entering high school he discovered graffiti and instantly feel in love with the art form. This gave him the opportunity to experiment with lettering, colors, backgrounds, and variety of characters. It was also exciting for him to be around other graffiti writers who had the same passion as him. Later in his years the artist moved away from graffiti and started to work with acrylics and then moved towards a more contemporary pop style of artwork.  His work is focused on observations the artist has seen during his passing years. He combines pop culture with detailed imagery to give the work his unique and signature style. Being highly influenced by 80’s nostalgia and the memories of his childhood, you can greatly see these reflections in his artwork. He uses dark satire to narrate the theme throughout his paintings, giving the viewer an insight on what drives the artist to create such work. His goal as a painter is to push boundaries and develop an independent style that blurs the line between analog and digital.

MALO IN PINK

My goal for the calavera was to incorporate my style and color palette, so it would be similar to my paintings. Growing up in the west side of San Antonio I wanted to take heavy imagery and words and make it fun and playful. I also wanted to promote a positive message by adding the recycle symbol, but with a twist. The title itself is a play on words from the film “Pretty In Pink”.
